山女魚 734 birch bark grip
7’3″ #4 Solid built for yamame

 北の大地、雨上がりの朝、ある釣り人は自宅から釣り場へと車を走らせ、その道すがら朝陽を浴び、きらきらと輝く樺の森を横目に川へ向かい。

また、ある釣り人は今日の釣りの余韻に浸りながら、夕陽の沈む樺の森を抜け家路に着いてゆく。

この風景は北国の釣り人にとって見慣れた日常かもしれない。

さてこの度、樺の森から採れた樹皮を積層し、グリップをつくりました。

昔からフライロッドのグリップ、ナイフのグリップと一部のビルダーの間で使われてきた樺の樹皮の積層グリップは歴史上、特別珍しい試みではありませんが、自分にとって北海道の森から生まれた このグリップ は特別なものとなりました。

肉厚で質の良い樺の樹皮採集はとても難しく、時期は初夏、樺の樹が最も水を吸い上げている時期に限られます。

それは、この時期でないと樹皮を綺麗に剥ぐことが出来ないからです。

また、この時期なら全ての樺樹皮が綺麗に剥げるかと言うとそうでもなく、タイミングよく水が上がっている樹からしか綺麗に樹皮を剥ぐことが出来ないのです。

これは感覚でしかないのです。

今年の夏、運良く樺の巨木から質の良い樹皮をとる事ができました。

小さな頃、山梨の盆地から遠くに八ヶ岳や富士山を眺めて育ちました。
多くの時間を費やした岩魚釣りでは長野県開田高原から御嶽山を望み釣りに没頭しました。
アメリカの名流ヘンリーズフォークからティトン山脈を望み。
ロッキー山脈を望むモンタナのトム モーガンの工房を訪れた時の感動と憧れ。
いつも遠くに大きな山が見えていました。

この度、日本のトラウトフィッシング・カントリーである北海道の略中央、大雪山・十勝連峰を望む丘の上、上川と空知部群界の分水嶺に工房を構えました。
工房にはフィッシングデモロッドを用意していますし、工房より車で一時間圏内には皆様が実際に私のロッドをテストできるフィールドも沢山あります。

僕はこの一年以上を7’4″ Solid builtのデザインに全ての時間をつぎ込んできました。

2014年 11月某日：

翌月に迫った展示会用の7’4″ #3と#4の2種類のデザインをフィックスさせた後、

会津のC＆Rで45cm~50cmのニジマスの気難しいライズを捕りました。

僕が展示会に向けてデザインしたのはアベレージサイズの山女魚/岩魚を楽しく釣る為の＃3と尺岩魚を素早く寄せるパワーを持った#4。

2014年 12月師走

会津で幕を閉じた2014年の釣りと展示会を経て、もう一度、2つのデザインと向き合いました。

もっと軽快な釣りをしたい。

そして、このロッドにもっと軽快感を出したいと考え始めました。

この7’4″ ソリッドの限界までもう一度、詰めてみようと。

先ずはバットを強めにした#4のフェルール下、５～10inを削りながら、キャスティングを繰り返してみる。

勿論、これは僕のアクションを探す作業であり、本来は表皮側を削って調節する様な事は絶対にしない。

これで良しという所まで削った後、もう一本用意したティップ、先端から15inchを細くしたモノと取り替える。

ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

軽快になるが、抜ける感覚がある。

自分の曲げたい位置で曲がらない。

これ以上、このバットを弄る価値はないと判断。

次に#3用のバットを持ち出し、グリップ上、10inchを3重に補強。

ティップは先端から15inchを細くしたモノを使う。

ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

フェルール下、５inchを補強。

もう一度、ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

バット、スエル部分の補強を一重外す。

もう一度、ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

もう、半分外す。

もう一度、ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

やっとイメージに近づく。

マイクロメーターで数値を測定、メモをトル。

移動中の飛行機でテーパーグラフを描く。

パワーが真っすぐ降りてくるイメージで測定値から微調整する。

帰宅後、直にこのバットの製作に取掛かった。

2015年 1月某日

僕は出来上がったバットと先端15inchのデザインが違うティップ2本を持って公園へ向かった。

先ずは先端15inchが太い方のティップ。

Scientific AnglersのSUPRA #4 WFを通してみる。

ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

ティップの自重のせいなのか？曲げたい場所より少し下が曲がる。

よってイメージよりも少し、モッタリ感が出る。

次に先端15inchが細い方のティップ。

ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

軽快だ。

僕はこのセットを持って川へ向かった。

リールはHardyのLight Weight、重量は135gを試す。

次にPrefect、重量は155g。

そして、ライン。

先ずはScientific AnglersのSUPRA #4 WF。

ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

カーブキャスト、リーチキャスト、メンディング。

イメージに近い軽快感。

しかし、その次に合わせたScientific AnglersのTRUT #4 WF はもっとしっくり来る。

竹という素材、僕のイメージする軽快なドライフライフィッシングにはこれ以上ヘッドの重いラインを試す価値はないであろう。

僕の7’4 2/1 for 4wt Solid builtにはリール重量は155g前後。

ラインはScientific AnglersのTRUT #4 WF、もしくはSUPRA #4 WF。

僕ならTRUT #4 WFをチョイスするが、これは釣り人の好みに任せたい。

そして、僕はこの7’4″ をCatKillsの展示用ロッドとさせて頂く事にした。

展示はアメリカ・ニューヨーク州 Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museumにて。

展示期間は2015年5月から10月までです。

The human sense and preference continue changing by experience little by little, And the essence does not change,I think so.

I spent all time for a design of 7’4 ‘ “Solid built, The periods were more than one year.

November,  2014

I let two kinds of designs of 7 4 ‘”#3 and #4 for the exhibitions that approached the next month fix, After that, I caught a rainbow trout of 17in~19in C&R of Aizu, The rise was very difficult.

Two designs which I designed for an exhibition are like that, #3 to catch a YAMAME and a IWANA of the average size happily, And #4 rod has power to catch a IWANA of more than 11inch.

December , 2014

I looked back on fishing and an exhibition of 2014, And I thought about two designs once again.

I  want to do lighter change, I came to think in this way, I want to light pleasant feeling to this rod more.

I  have begun to Search for the limit of this solid rod,

At first, Strongbatt of #4, I scraped 5 – 10in under the ferrule, I repeated casting.

Naturally, The work that this Search for my original action, If the original, I do’nt never scraped power fiber.

I scraped it and fine tuning it, I exchange it for the tip that made another one, It is the thing which thinned 15inch from the tip top.

Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul. I confirm it many times.

It was light pleasant feeling, But I feel that power falls out.

The position that oneself wants to change does not bend.

I judge that, Let’s stop that I pursue this.

I took a batt for #3, I reinforce 10inch on from a grip to three folds, And a tip is the thing which thinned 15inch from the tip top.

Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul, I confirm it many times.

I reinforce 5inch under the ferrule.

Once again, Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul.

I exclude one fold of reinforcement of the swell part.

Once again, Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul.

I excluded half.

Once again, Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul, I confirm it many times.

At last it neared my image.

I measure in a micrometer, I taken notes.

I drew a taper graph with a moving airplane, And I made a fine adjustment for the image that power dropped straight from measurements.

After I came back home, I made this batt.

January, 2015

I went to the park with two tips that a design of tip 15inch was different from a completed batt.

At first, I tried a thick tip, I used a line of Scientific Anglers SUPRA #4.

Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul.

A part below my image bends. I think the reason to be the weight of the tip, So It is slightly slower than an image.

The next joints a thin tip.

Once again, Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul, I confirm it many times.

It was pleasant feeling.

I went to the river with this set.

The reel tries Light Weight of Hardy, This weight is 135g.

The next was Prefect,This weight is 155g.

And I choose the line, At first it is SUPRA #4 WF of Scientific Anglers.

Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul, curve cast, reach cast, mending, Good sense, I confirm it many times.

However,  TRUT #4 WF of Scientific Anglers which I put together next was better.

A bamboo rod for the dry fly fishing that I image is unworthy to try the heavy line of the head more.

As for the reel weight,  around 4 g is the best in my “7 4 ’2/1 for 4wt Solid built”.

The line wants you to choose TRUT #4 WF of Scientific Anglers or SUPRA #4 WF, I choose TRUT #4 WF,  but this is affinity with the anglers.

I display these 7 4 ‘”in Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, It is October from May,  2015 during the display period.

暖かな陽降り注ぐ日曜日、僕は家族を連れてお気に入りの公園へ向かう事にした。

愛車、VOLVO 240のトランクルームにはお弁当を詰め込んだピクニックバスケットとロッドチューブ。

いつもの様に息子は広い芝生で無邪気に歩き回っている。

かみさんはブランケットを広げ、その姿を眺めて微笑んでいる。

僕の今日の本当の目的はNew rod 7’4 #3のチェックだ。

実は東北でのテストしたBatt マイナス1、tip の基本テーパーとそれのティップ20インチの間を修正したモノとtip マイナス1の組み合わせが気になっていた。コレを#3ラインで試したかった。

イメージは快適なキャスティングフィールとアベレージサイズの山女魚・岩魚を楽しく釣り、尺サイズまでを捕れる竿。

僕はロッドチューブからBatt1本、Tip3本を取り出した。

Batt マイナス1とtip マイナス1の組み合わせ。

いつもの様に両手でグリップを握り左右に揺らす。  曲がるポイントを確認。  次に眼を閉じて手に伝わる感覚をチェック。  フェルールの居場所は？ティップの居場所は？

次はラインを通す。テストするラインはScientific AnglersのSUPRA。これが僕の竿のスタンダード。

5mをピックアップ＆レイダウン、次は7m、そして8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール、、、幾度も確認。

フェルール上を少し強くしたい。

先ずは、フェルール上、10インチの部分に9mmのメンディングテープを均等に巻いて行く。

もう一度、ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

あと、5インチ程、メンディングテープを均等に巻いて行く。

もう一度、ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

もう少し、メンディングテープを巻いてみる。

今度は一部だけ外す。

ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

この作業を初めてかれこれ二時間。

やっとイメージに近づく。

マイクロメーターで数値を測定、メモをトル。

次は、tip の基本テーパーとの組み合わせ。

いつものテスト。

イメージより早くバットが曲がる。違う。

次は、tip の基本テーパーティップ20インチの間を修正したモノとの組み合わせ。

いつものテスト。イメージに近い。

一番はじめのメンディングテープぐるぐる巻きのティップと交互に感覚を確かめる。

やはり、tip の基本テーパーティップ20インチの間を修正したモノとの組み合わせが一番、イメージに近い。

もう一度、ピックアップ＆レイダウン、5m、7m、8m、シングルホール、ダブルホール。

悪くはないがもう少し。

「八重子！ループはどう？」かみさんに声をかけるが彼女の返答もイマイチ。

グリップを1cm上に持ち代える。

コレだ！かみさんもループの変化に気がつく。

この組み合わせで、グリップのデザインをあと1cm上を握らせるデザインに変更しようと思う。

2014年10月14日：

禁漁前の丹沢へ親友の安河と釣りに出かけた。

ロッドは無論、テスト中の7’4″ #3。

柔らかい秋の日差しの中、可愛い山女魚たちが相手をしてくれた。

流れのスジからは山女魚たちが飛び出してくる。

いい大人ふたりが河原で大声で悔しがったり、喜んだり。

カーブキャスト、リーチキャスト、メンディング、、、感覚もいい。

やっぱり、釣りは楽しいと身体が言っている。

日が傾きかけた午後、堰堤を超えた所に岩魚が好みそうな沢が見えた。

深みのあるプールに大きな沈み岩、最後のポイントは安河が譲ってくれる。

CDCカディス #16をそっと水面に置く。

岩の下から黒い陰がゆっくり現れ、CDCカディスを咥えターン。

 よしっ！ 竿のベンドを確認。

難なく、26cm程の雄岩魚をランディング。

一先ず、今年のテストは終了。

そして、僕たちはそこから道路へ上がる事にした。

9 Sep, 2014:

I went to the favorite park with a family, The warmth was Sunday.

It is a picnic hamper and a rod tube in a trunk room of VOLVO 240.

My son plays in the big lawn.

The wife opens a blanket and she look at the figure and smile.

I check casting of New rod  “7’4 2/1 for 3wt Solid built”, it is a purpose of the truth.

In fact, I was worried about the different combination that I tested in TOHOKU, it is 1batt and 3tip.

I wanted to try this at 3wt line.

My image is like that, Comfortable casting feel, To catch a YAMAME and a IWANA of the average size happily.

I took one Batt,  ThreeTip out of a rod tube.

A combination of Batt -1 and tip -1.

I grasp a grip with both hands and shake a rod in right and left., this is a confirmation method of when.

Next, I try this at 3wt line, The line for tests is SUPRA of Scientific Anglers, This line is standard of my rod.

Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul. I confirm it many times.

I wanted to make some middle section strong.

At first, upper a ferrule, I surround mending tape on a section of 10 inches.

Once again, Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul.

And I surround approximately 5 inches, Mending tape.

Once again, Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul, And I surround some mending tape.

The next removes a some mending tape, Once again, Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul.

Two hours passed after they started this work, At last it gets closer to an image.

I measure in a micrometer, I taken notes.

The next is a combination with the fundamental taper of tip.

I did a usual test. A bat was earlier bend than my image, it was different from an image,

Next combination with Tip where only a point revised basic taper between 20 inches.

I did a usual test. It was near to an image.

I check a sense with a combination of the beginning in turn most. the last combination is the best,

Once again, Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul.

I asked a my wife, “Yaeko! How about cleanest my loop?, her answer wasn’t good enough,  too.

I had,  and I changed into the grip upper 1cm.

It is this! My wife noticed the change of the loop,  too.

I decided this combination, The redesign is simultaneously performed.

14 Oct, 2014:

I went to TANZAWA before the prohibition of fishing whit YASUKAWA of best friend.

It was tested the rod 7’4″ #4 on that day, Iin gentle autumn sunlight,  I caught many “YAMAME”.

YAMAME rise of the line of the flow, we were in make merry like a child in a riverbank,

Curve Cast, Reach Cast, Mending, Good sense.

My mind and the body says that the fishing is fun.

We found a samll stream which a IWANA seemed to like in the afternoon.

A Sinking rock big in the depth to the pool, he yield to Last point for me.

I put CDC caddis #16 to the surface of the water quietly, A black shade appeared from under a rock slowly,  He turn with ant in its mouth.,

“YEAH !” I confirm the bend of the rod, and I caught a IWANA of 10inch.

The test of this year is finished for the time being.

And we decided to enter from there the road.

岩魚釣りをイメージ、それに適したアクションをここから導き出す。

2014年9月：

僕は師匠とテストを兼ねた岩魚釣りに東北へ出かけた。

夏以降の雪代に磨かれた東北の岩魚は強く、その魚達は絶好のテスターとなる。

東の空が藍色から曙色に染まる頃、目が覚めた。

Batt Bに全てのTipを組み合わせる。

いつもの様に両手でグリップを握り左右に揺らす。

曲がるポイントを確認。

次に眼を閉じて手に伝わる感覚をチェック。

フェルールの居場所は？ティップの居場所は？

続いて、Batt C、E と12通りの組み合わせ全てを同じ方法で確認。

その中からBatt E、Tip G と Batt E、Tip A の組み合わせを選び出す。

ORVIS CFO リールを合わせ、同じ様に両手でグリップを握り左右に揺らす。

しっくり来ない。

次にHARDY PREFECT リールを合わせ、同じ様に両手でグリップを握り左右に揺らす。

テストはこれで行く。

この日のテストリバーは8月に入ってやっと雪代が落ち着いた岩魚川。

地元の名手のガイディング。

Batt EとTip Bの組み合わせ、先ず、ラインと乗せて5mをピックアップ＆レイダウン、次は7m、そして8m、シングルホールを入れて実際の釣りに使うキャストをしてみる。押さえ込みの時に違和感。

ピックアップ＆レイダウン、シングルホール、ダブルホール、、、幾度も確認。

河原には高く上った太陽が照りつけている。

目の前には木が被った、プール。如何にもといったポイントだ。

フライングアント#18を水面へそっと置く。

岩の下から黒い陰がゆっくり現れ、フライングアントを咥えターン。

よしっ！

竿のベンドを確認。

魚がよらない？

魚が強いのか？

この川、特有のブルーバック。鰭が大きく、美しい個体。

26cm程の雄岩魚をランディング。

しかし、テストは不合格。終了。

翌日はもう一つのアクション、前日よりBattプラス1、Tipプラス2強いアクション。

前日と同じ様にピックアップ＆レイダウン、シングルホール、ダブルホール、、、幾度も確認。

シャープで強い。

快適なキャスティングフィール。

ラインを乗せて驚く、これはいいぞ！

次はフィールドテスト。

メインの流れから外れた場所に大きな岩。

小さな落ち込みからの流れはそのままその大きな岩を沿ってメインチャンネルへ流れ込む。

前日の当りフライ、フライングアントをその岩に沿わせる。

岩の下から黒い陰がゆっくり現れ、フライングアントを咥えターン。

よしっ！

竿のベンドを確認する前に25cm程、雄岩魚をランディング。

尺上岩魚を引き出すパワーを十分備えている。

もう少し、使ってみようと思う。

I did some taper designs which were based on the basic taper of the yamame rod.

It is a design of Batt three and Tip four,

The design images IWANA fishing.

I arrive at an action suitable for it from these.

September,2014:

I went to Tohoku for the IWANA fishing that served as a test with a teacher.

The IWANA strengthened to snow charges is strong.

It is perfect testers.

When the east sky was stained with light , salmon color from indigo blue, we woke up.

I connect all Tip in Batt B.

I grasp a grip with both hands and shake a rod in right and left.

This is a confirmation method of when.

I identify all 12 ways of combinations as Batt C~E by the same method successively.

I pick a combination of Batt C and Tip G,  Batt E and Tip A from that.

Put ORVIS CFO reels together and I grasp a grip with both hands in the same way and shake it in right and left.

I  do not come nicely.

Next, I put HARDY PREFECT reels together.

The test will make this.

A local master hand guides the test river of this day.

At first, Combination of Batt E and Tip B,　I let a guide pass the line.

Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul.

I notice that something is off about that.

Pickup & lay-down, 5 meters, 7 meters, single haul  double haul. I confirm it many times

The sun was beating down on the riverbank.

The point that a tree was covered with a pool, Good point.

I put flying ant #18 to the surface of the water quietly.

A black shade appeared from under a rock slowly, He turn with ant in its mouth.

“YEAH !” I confirm the bend of the rod, A fish does not come, Is a fish strong?.

Shortly after, I caught a IWANA of 10inch.

The characteristic of this rive, Blue back, The individual that a fin is greatly, beautiful,

However,  the test was unacceptable.

I tested another action the next day, The action that is stronger than yesterday, The tip is +1 and a batt is +2.

I confirm it many times.

It is sharp and strong, Comfortable casting feel, I was surprised to throw a line, amazing!.

After that, I do a field-test.

There is a big rock in the place that was off a main flow.

It goes and flows through the big rock from a small fall, And it flow to the main channel.

I floated flying ant along the rock.

A black shade appeared from under a rock slowly, He turn with ant in its mouth.

“YEAH !” Shortly after, I caught a IWANA of 10inch.

I couldn’t confirm the bend of the rod, Because it was too easy landing.

I think that this rod has power to catch a IWANA of more than 11inch.

I want to test how things go a little while longer…
